You need to have a theory and a plan before you start. Then find a place were you can test your plan. Then you need to have tools to build what you are making.

A way that I could use this test thinking is by writing in different ways and use different types of writing styles to see how my NaNoWriMo story might turn out if I changed a couple of things.

The planning would be immense. While it feels like such a natural experience I am guessing that they would have used a computer model to build potential models. Then they might have use laser cutters (or some other precise machine) to ensure all the pieces Are exactly the right size.
After this I guess they would print and test a small number of the pieces to see if they work.
It is so amazing how modern thinking, traditional sounds and nature can combine in such a beautiful way.
