This Thursday… 6-7:30 PM… Sharing our Learning!

Dear Parents,

This Thursday the 11th of April will be our sharing of learning evening.  The students have worked hard to learn and understand the Sustainable Development Goals and now they are looking forward to sharing this with you.

The evening will start promptly at 18:00 in your child’s classroom, and we will be finished around 19:30. The students are asked to dress ‘smartly’ for the evening. In other words – no shorts, track pants, strappy tops, very short skirts or t-shirts please.  There will be no refreshments served, so could you please ensure your child has eaten before the event. Thank you for your support! We look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Warmly,

Grade 5 Team

Exhibition & MS Elective Course Selection

Dear Parents,

Next week is a big one in G5! As described in the Newsfeed this week, next Tuesday evening is our Exhibition. Also next week, on Thursday during the school day, students will be selecting their Middle School elective courses. There are detailed posts about both on this week’s newsfeed.

EXHIBITION

The Grade 5 students and teachers are very excited about our upcoming exhibition presentation on Tuesday, April 24.  The students have worked very hard throughout this unit and should be very proud of their accomplishments.

Here is an outline of how the evening will work (you will receive a program on the night).

17:40-17:55: Arrival and a chance to look at art produced by the Grade 5 students. We ask that students stay with their parents at this time.

17:55-18:00: Parents head to the MPR and students head to their exhibit tables (the loudspeaker will be used to make announcements during the course of the evening).

18:00-18:15: Formal presentation for the parents led by Alice Sikora, curriculum leader.

18:15-19:30Student presentations.

19:30Clean up.  We will ask the students to take down their exhibit and return it to their classroom.

We would like students to dress smartly for this occasion.

MS COURSE SELECTION (repost from Newsfeed)

On April 26, Grade 5 students will register their elective courses for the next school year. Please see the descriptions in the Grade 6 electives options.

Students need to select their electives for both the first semester (August to December) and the second semester (January to June). In order to fill the elective blocks/classes, students must choose two electives for both semesters which may consist of  4 semester courses or 1 year-long course and 2 semester courses.

Please note that students who will be in a learning support class next year should choose either 1 year-long course or 2 semester courses along with learning support. Learning support will take the place of an elective class.

Please discuss the elective options with your son/daughter and help them decide on the electives they would like to take next year. Please also complete this form to indicate your choices in advance of the April 26 selection undertaken with students at school.

On Thursday, April 26, Middle School Assistant Principal Suzanne Keys will visit the Grade 5 students and they will be enrolled in their elective choices.

There may be cases where students have conflicts in scheduling and may not be able to take their desired elective. We will do our best to accommodate each student’s elective choices, and will contact you if there is a problem.

If you have any questions please contact the Middle School Assistant Principal Suzanne Keys.

Exhibition Update!

Dear 5R families,

We’re looking forward to welcoming you on Thursday to our celebration of Literary Essays!

I wanted to update you on our Exhibition work. Students are deep into their self-directed learning and the topics are fascinating. We have students inquiring into everything from the psychology of color, to agriculture on Mars, to carpentry techniques and designing systems for barter and exchange. So exciting!

While the exhibition itself is still over a month away, we’ve got a very busy road before then. This is very much a time of year when there will be ongoing work happening at both school and home. Students will need to regularly sign in to their ZIS accounts from home, so they can access their Google Drive and Classroom, to continue their work.

This week is the tail end of preliminary research. Students should have completed the bulk of this by the holiday. If not, it will certainly need to be completed over the holiday.

After the holiday, we will have a week of developing projects, the various websites, books, essays, presentations, experiments, lessons and more that students will use to experience and explore their topics in another manner. Then, we’ll have one week of developing presentation materials and plans, before we hit the exhibition itself.

In the meantime, please do continue to have an active conversation with your child regarding their exhibition research and progress. You are welcome to get involved in constructively supporting their deadlines and priorities. For a snapshot on the research questions they’re pursuing, and how they’ve described their research work, please find their information on this document, and speak with them about it!

All students will be pitching and presenting their work this Friday morning. I’m sure they’ll want to practice their pitch to an audience the night before 🙂 Pitches should be around 1 minute in length and include a brief outline of the topic, what students plan to learn, how they’ll learn it and what they think they may do about it.

Thanks for your support!

Exhibition Update!

Dear Parents,

It was a busy but great first week back from break!  Students are working hard on their Exhibition projects.  This week has been “project week”, and next week will be “presentation week.”

The bulk of student projects should be finished by the end of school on Tuesday, May 2.  On May 3, we will begin working on the presentations.  Exhibition night is coming soon (May 11, from 6:00-7:30).  On this night, students will need to dress nicely (in clothing appropriate for a concert performance; no jeans).

To facilitate the students’ transition to middle school and to help students plan and keep track of their Exhibition work, they have been using their agendas.  We write in these everyday.  It would be helpful if you could discuss the agenda each night with your child. We are trying this based on feedback from this year’s grade 6 students about what we could have done to help them be better prepared for middle school. Hopefully this will benefit the students in several ways.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Upcoming dates:

May 11: Exhibition evening, 6:00-7:30

May 31: Visit to the middle school

June 15: Last day of school, and grade 5 celebration (9:00-10:30)
