Exhibition Update!

Dear Parents,

It was a busy but great first week back from break!  Students are working hard on their Exhibition projects.  This week has been “project week”, and next week will be “presentation week.”

The bulk of student projects should be finished by the end of school on Tuesday, May 2.  On May 3, we will begin working on the presentations.  Exhibition night is coming soon (May 11, from 6:00-7:30).  On this night, students will need to dress nicely (in clothing appropriate for a concert performance; no jeans).

To facilitate the students’ transition to middle school and to help students plan and keep track of their Exhibition work, they have been using their agendas.  We write in these everyday.  It would be helpful if you could discuss the agenda each night with your child. We are trying this based on feedback from this year’s grade 6 students about what we could have done to help them be better prepared for middle school. Hopefully this will benefit the students in several ways.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Upcoming dates:

May 11: Exhibition evening, 6:00-7:30

May 31: Visit to the middle school

June 15: Last day of school, and grade 5 celebration (9:00-10:30)

Sharing G4’s Genius Hour Inquiries…

On Friday we had a great visit with Mr Marsh’s G4s. They’ve embarked on their own Genius Hour inquiries and thought they could benefit from a consultation visit with 5R. We paired off, according to areas of knowledge and/or interest and spent a half hour looking at their process, asking questions and making suggestions. 5R were exceptionally good at taking their role seriously and really trying to support the thinking of their partners.

For photos and details of the G4’s feelings about the event, click through to Mr Marsh’s blog post.

Student Led Conferences are April 6

Student Led Conferences are coming up on Tuesday, April 6!  On this day, students will have an opportunity to share their learning and growth with their parents.
Important information:
  • There will be no regular classes on that day.
  • Each child will have a passport. As they visit the different classes/stations, they will check off or stamp this passport. In the homeroom class, you’ll hear about their progress in literacy, unit, mathematics, and on their learning path goals. You’ll also visit single subject classes (PE, music and German. Art will be shared in the classroom).
  • This is a student-led conference, rather than a traditional parent/teacher conference. Your child will lead the conference and teachers will not be involved in giving feedback.
  • Follow this link to open our class’s sign-up sheet.  Sign up for a slot either in block 1 (8:30-10:00 AM), block 2 (10:30 AM-12:00 PM), or block 3 (1:00-2:30 PM). On the conference day, your child will begin in either our classroom or in the single subject classrooms. The students and I will work out their starting points together.
  • Please attend during the block for which you sign up. We want to keep the number of families in at one time to a manageable number.

Here are the links to sign up (same as those embedded above):

Assessment Update

Dear 5R Families,

We’ve had a lot of assessments completed recently! On Friday your child will be bringing home three assessments:

  1. The completed rubric for their most recent Genius Hour inquiry, which includes self-assessment by students, as well as teacher assessment on the same document.
  2. Decimals assessment. As our decimals unit in Math is winding up, students will bring this assessment, along with their reflection document and a checklist of understandings.
  3. Research-based opinion essays and a checklist of writing progress. These essays, which were shared along with the student-completed checklists during our writing celebration several weeks ago. They will be accompanied by a publication package that includes the final essay and documents that your child feels help tell the story of this writing experience.

All of these are to be shared with you, in conversation with your child, and returned to school by the end of next week, Thursday, March 9. Please sign the assessment documents and, if you require more time to share, please let me know.

As with previous assessments, they are bringing these home so that you may have a better understanding of their thinking and progress.

These assessments should be understood as being a snapshot of student understanding on a particular day at a particular time, in a particular way of demonstrating thinking. This particular way of assessing understanding may present an incomplete picture of student progress. It is for this reason that many forward-thinking institutions have moved away from written assessments as the sole way of testing and grading. ZIS is no exception and these assessments represent only one of several ways data on a student’s thinking is collected.

These assessments are being sent home primarily to enrich your conversations with your child about their thinking and learning. Please take the time to look at them with your child, alongside their reflection. Then, sign them (somewhere obvious) and return them promptly to school. I would appreciate them returned by next Thursday, March 9. If you require more time, please let me know.

Many thanks for your ongoing support of your child’s home away from home!

Warm regards,

Jamie

3 Great Fantasies

As we kick off our new writing unit, Fantasy Fiction, we’ve also begun reading a great fantasy novel, Found, by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Today we were speaking about how useful it is, when discussing a new genre, to have common references. I suggested that it would be great if students had an opportunity to watch several popular fantasy-genre films, so we could have their characters and plots as common talking points. I suggested three films:

  1. The Princess Bride
  2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (aka Philosopher’s Stone)
  3. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

The trailers of all three films are included below. While it is not required that students watch the films, it would contribute significantly to our conversations throughout this unit. All three are sufficiently popular that they should be widely available (several students claimed to own all three!) through friends and various online services.

A Big Win for Teamwork

Today marked the conclusion of the ZIS ES Dodgeball tournament. A few months ago, suddenly the class was abuzz with choosing teams, and who wanted to be involved. Over the months we watched two 5R teams play round after round. In many ways it brought our class together with two 5R teams rushing down to the gym at lunch to cheer each other on. Even class members who weren’t part of the tournament became part of the regular, powered-up cheering squad.

In today’s final game, the 5R Red Eagles went up against the other finalist and prevailed. What was most notable was that after their final win, both teams immediately began congratulating each other for their efforts. A big round of applause for team spirit, learning to win, learning to lose, learning to be gracious and learning to be supportive. Well done teams.

Welcome, Shares & Scarlet Fever

Welcome back to school!

5R arrived back (mostly) well rested and ready to go this morning. It was lovely to hear of all the holiday adventures.

A quick reminder that this Thursday and Friday mornings we will be writing our annual G5 ISA assessments. There is no preparation required for this day. Just make sure that your child has slept well, had a healthy breakfast, has a healthy snack and their reading book and water bottle ready to go!

Before too much time has passed, I wanted to share images from the Genius Hour sharing event before the holidays. Thanks so much to those who were able to attend and support our process and progress. I’ve added images to the album linked here. Enjoy!

Unfortunately, one student in our class has come down with Scarlet Fever over the holiday. This is not terribly uncommon, and is related to Strep Throat. Please see the details on this document.

2 Community Celebrations – Essays & Genius Hour!

Dear 5R Families,

Many, many thanks to all of you who joined us last Friday to share in celebrating the publication of our essays. For those who weren’t able to join, this week students will have the option of bringing their work home for a few days to share with family members who weren’t able to attend. Please enjoy sharing with them and return the publication packages promptly by this Thursday.

To see all the photos from the event, click here.

This Friday we would like to invite you for a second sharing session. This time, we’d like to share our Genius Hour inquiries. You’ll have a chance to learn about cooking, volcanos, gravity, ants and so much more! Genius Hour is an amazing opportunity to build skills for learning while harnessing the intrinsic motivation of student interests. For more on the power of intrinsic motivation, I highly recommend Dan Pink’s TED talk, embedded below.

This Friday, please join the fifth grade classes for our GENIUS HOUR FAIR, for the hour before the whole school assembly.

Where? Fifth grade classrooms

What? Genius Hour Fair

When? 1:30-2:30

Don’t miss it!
