Thank you

Dear 5R families,

Thank you.

Thank you for your support of our learning community in fifth grade. Thank you for asking when you have questions. Thank you for joining us when you are able to. Thank you for being part of your child’s home away from home. And most importantly, thank you for nurturing such a lovely group of children. This year has been an ongoing pleasure.

I wish you all a playful, relaxing, peaceful, healthy and fun holiday. Many thanks to Katy and Mandy for their efforts as room parents, and thanks to all of you for your generous holiday gifts.

See you soon,

Jamie

Shh… Secret Santa & Holiday Celebrations

Dear 5R Families,

After a lot of requests, most 5R students agreed that they would like to organize a Secret Santa exchange over the final week of school. Grace took the lead and organized participants. Thanks!

Here are the details:

  • Participation was opt-in only. Several students have chosen not to be involved.
  • Yesterday participants drew secret names of the person for whom they’ll be the giver.
  • The guideline on gifts/acts of kindness was nothing is to be purchased, or passed along. Students are expected to make an effort. We’ve discussed that this may mean doing something nice for the person. Making something for them (a card, a craft, an artwork… cookies?).
  • Participating students are expected to secretly give or do their thing(s) over the next week.
  • Next Friday, we will share who was matched with whom, at our end-of-term holiday celebration.
  • This isn’t meant to be a big deal, just a fun twist to our final week of the year.

Also, as mentioned, we will be celebrating our end of the year together next Friday. The G5 team has settled on a multi-plex cinema party, with different movies and activities in each of the G5 classrooms. Class parents have organized treats, so there is no requirement to bring any snacks etc. We are, however, looking for suitable movies. These do not have to be holiday/winter themed, though that might be nice too. If your child would like to bring in a suggestion or two, please send them with the DVDs by next Wednesday. DVDs will be returned after the party on Friday.

Something Beautiful

Whenever you try to create something new, you can expect to do some research and test some theories.

After you watch the video, think about these questions:

If you wanted to build something like the system in the video…

  1. What knowledge would you need before building?
  2. What tests or experiments might you try before building?
  3. How could you use this kind of “test/experiment-thinking” step in other situations?

Find a quiet place. Put on your headphones and turn it up.

Bulbs & Buddies

A wonderful growing element of the ZIS campus, as part of our sustainability initiatives, is the ZIS garden, revamped and extended this year on the elementary campus. Along with the efforts of Kristie Lear, ZIS’ resident sustainability in education expert, several 5R students have played a role in getting the garden up and running. Earlier in the year, Matilda, Phoebe and Claudia received ZIS mission awards for their leadership in this initiative. Importantly, we’ve also benefitted from the tireless volunteering of two community members who are passionate and skilled gardeners.

Today, 5R and our buddy class, 2M, met with these gardeners and spent some time planting tulip bulbs that will bloom next spring. Enjoy these photos of the event!

Balance in PE, Math and Writing changes…

After the success of the fun and challenge runs, Grade 5 have moved on to a unit exploring balance in PE. Have a look at the images!

Moving into November, we will soon be wrapping up our Math unit exploring Place Value and Operations, and moving in to our next exploration of Fractions. In Writing we’ll soon be publishing our Personal Narratives and launching into a unit on Research-Based Argument Essays. Expect to see more soon regarding samples of math and writing learning coming home!
