Dear families,
Unfortunately we have another case of head lice in G5. Please have a read through the linked document from our nurses for suggestions on treatment.
Thanks!
Jamie
Dear Parents,
A short reminder about the PA organised Book and Bake sale next week, Tuesday 29th, Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st January. Â The money raised is to support Lower School activities.
This is how it will work:
There is still time to donate children’s and grown up books. Simply bring them in a carrier bag with our class and your child’s name written on it, and take it to room B111, next to the faculty lounge. The class who brings in the most books will get a popcorn party hosted by our wonderful PA.
Many thanks.
Dear 5R Families,
Thank you so much for coming out to support our essayists on Friday. It was wonderful to see representation from nearly every family, and many thanks for your support for students whose families were unable to attend.
The class did an excellent job of introducing the stories, sharing excerpts from their writing, and then offering feedback to each other. Mr Sargeant, in his visit, commented on how remarkable it was to hear the depth of thinking, and even the craft of writing from fifth graders. They’ve really reached to come to grips with some big ideas, and to experiment in a form of writing that was new to all of them. They should be proud.
Please enjoy this folder of images from the event.
One more note! From our ZIS nurses, please have a look at this document, outlining some of the common winter illnesses that sweep through our community at this time of year, and steps you can take to keep your child, and other children healthy. Thank you!

Dear 5R Families…
What a great first day back! This is just a quick reminder regarding Friday’s Writing Celebration. As mentioned on the newsfeed prior to the holidays: Parents are invited to join us on Friday, January 11 as we celebrate the wonderful writing the students have done during our literary essay unit. Please meet in your child’s classroom at 14:30. We look forward to seeing you then!
Leading up to this, some students may also be bringing home writing to complete this week. Please support our writers!
Warm regards,
Jamie
Welcome back to 5R!
I hope everyone enjoyed a restful and/or refreshing holiday. We spent the time in South Africa, revisiting favourite spots, and exploring new corners… If anyone’s considering a trip, we have some great tips! 🙂
First of all, many many thanks for the generous and thoughtful holiday gifts on the final day of school in December. They were (and will continue to be) delicious! I loved the contributions from across the spectrum of where we all call home, it led to a great guessing game! Thank you.
5R is lucky to have been offered two new students beginning in January. Felicia (whose family is originally Swedish and has been living in Switzerland for some time), and Truman (whose family has just moved from the USA). We’re very excited to have them join our community!
Over the coming weeks we will be launching into our Fractions unit in Math, wrapping up our Literary essays in Writing, beginning to explore Non-Fiction in Reading and transitioning from the Science of Energy, to more of a Social Studies-driven exploration of Energy’s role in the development of human civilization. As always, look for detailed descriptions of these units on the Newsfeed.
As winter is finally upon us, I highly recommend keeping a pair of snow boots and snow hat, gloves and pants at school through the coming months. We can’t really predict when we’ll have a big snowfall, but when we do, it’s great to get out in it!
Best wishes for the new term!
Jamie
The Grade 5 winter party will take place on Friday, December 14, 10:30 to 12:30, with the whole grade joining together to share the event.
This year we will be incorporating a small community service project into the winter party. We are asking Grade 5 students to bring in non-perishable food items and toiletries for the Swiss Red Cross‘s 2xChristmas program – which offers a holiday distribution here in Switzerland as well as in countries in Eastern Europe. This Swiss Red Cross has been distributing these items for 22 years.
The students will view the following video that provides some insight into the program so that they can understand how their donations will help those in need. This video is in German, but you can add closed-captioning and auto-translate to English.
When deciding what to send in with your child for the community service project, please remember that foodstuffs must have a shelf-life of at least 6 months. Toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, cotton wool, soap and shampoo are also very welcome.
Please make sure your students bring in their items on the week of the winter party!
Please also see the separate post from the PA room parents regarding sending in snacks for the party.
Thanks for your assistance in making this a great Grade 5 year for our children!
Dear families,
Head lice have been found on several students in first and third grade. The linked document explains what approaches you may want to take to prevent and treat them.
Thanks very much,
Jamie
Dear 5R Community,
This is just a quick update to share a letter from the nurses department. We have a confirmed case of scarlet fever in Gr 2 and two cases of strep throat in Gr 1 & 5. For your information, I’m attaching a letter with some helpful details about scarlet fever. Stay healthy!
Also, last week 5R finally met with our first grade buddy class. We had a fun, autumn time playing in the woods together. It’s always remarkable to see fifth graders switch into care-giving, nurturing roles with younger students. I’ve shared a number of photos from this event here. Additionally, enjoy the photos of our ongoing science experiments in our Matter Unit, and some images of students debating characters in preparation for literary essay writing. Enjoy!
What a fantastic day we had last week exploring the creations of Jean Tinguely in Basel. The students were very engaged as they made sketches and recorded ‘what they saw’, ‘what they thought’ and what they wondered’.
