Student Led Conferences 2019 – Please sign up!

Dear Parents,

Student Led Conferences will take place at the EC Villa in Kilchberg and at the Waedenswil Lower School Campus on Thursday, March 28th. On this day, normal school is suspended.

A unique feature of the Student Led Conference is that the students themselves guide their parents through a series of activity and sharing stations both in the homeroom and in single subject areas. All students will have been prepared for this experiences, and at many stations, the teacher will have provided prompts and questions for you to ask your child about their learning in order to open up deeper reflection and conversation. All curriculum areas will be explored.

Students are free to communicate in English or in any other language that is significant to them and to you. In this conference, the student’s voice is pre-eminent. The teachers will be in attendance, but very much in the background and do not engage in discussion. This is the time for your child to take on an authentic leadership role and to take you on an exciting journey of their learning.

Please sign up for one of the time blocks on the class sign up sheet. Expect to spend approximately 40 minutes in your child’s homeroom and a further 40 minutes visiting single subject areas. You may do this in any order that you and your child wish within the time block you have chosen.

We look forward to welcoming you and your child on this day.

Please also note, on this day there will be no drop-off child care provision.

Please type your name and your child’s into one of the available time slots in this document.

Visit to the Book and Bake Sale – Tuesday, January 29

Dear Parents,

A short reminder about the PA organised Book and Bake sale next week, Tuesday 29th, Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st January.  The money raised is to support Lower School activities.

This is how it will work:

  • Our Class  will attend the Book and Bake sale on Tuesday, January 29 at 1:35.
  • The students are allowed to spend CHF 5
  • All items are priced the same, CHF 1
  • Please allow students to take CHF 5 on the day of the sale
  • Each student is allowed to buy a maximum of 4 books and 1 baked good when we visit as a class, there will be options to buy non sweet products too.
  • Parents can also go to the sale with their children after school (until 17.00) on Wednesday and Thursday.

There is still time to donate children’s and grown up books. Simply bring them in a carrier bag with our class and your child’s name written on it, and take it to room B111, next to the faculty lounge. The class who brings in the most books will get a popcorn party hosted by our wonderful PA.

Many thanks.

Essay Celebration & Winter Illnesses

Dear 5R Families,

Thank you so much for coming out to support our essayists on Friday. It was wonderful to see representation from nearly every family, and many thanks for your support for students whose families were unable to attend.

The class did an excellent job of introducing the stories, sharing excerpts from their writing, and then offering feedback to each other. Mr Sargeant, in his visit, commented on how remarkable it was to hear the depth of thinking, and even the craft of writing from fifth graders. They’ve really reached to come to grips with some big ideas, and to experiment in a form of writing that was new to all of them. They should be proud.

Please enjoy this folder of images from the event.

One more note! From our ZIS nurses, please have a look at this document, outlining some of the common winter illnesses that sweep through our community at this time of year, and steps you can take to keep your child, and other children healthy. Thank you!

Writing Celebration Invitation

Dear 5R Families…

What a great first day back! This is just a quick reminder regarding Friday’s Writing Celebration. As mentioned on the newsfeed prior to the holidays: Parents are invited to join us on Friday, January 11 as we celebrate the wonderful writing the students have done during our literary essay unit. Please meet in your child’s classroom at 14:30.  We look forward to seeing you then!

Leading up to this, some students may also be bringing home writing to complete this week. Please support our writers!

Warm regards,

Jamie

Welcome back!

Welcome back to 5R!

I hope everyone enjoyed a restful and/or refreshing holiday. We spent the time in South Africa, revisiting favourite spots, and exploring new corners… If anyone’s considering a trip, we have some great tips! 🙂

First of all, many many thanks for the generous and thoughtful holiday gifts on the final day of school in December. They were (and will continue to be) delicious! I loved the contributions from across the spectrum of where we all call home, it led to a great guessing game! Thank you.

5R is lucky to have been offered two new students beginning in January. Felicia (whose family is originally Swedish and has been living in Switzerland for some time), and Truman (whose family has just moved from the USA). We’re very excited to have them join our community!

Over the coming weeks we will be launching into our Fractions unit in Math, wrapping up our Literary essays in Writing, beginning to explore Non-Fiction in Reading and transitioning from the Science of Energy, to more of a Social Studies-driven exploration of Energy’s role in the development of human civilization. As always, look for detailed descriptions of these units on the Newsfeed.

As winter is finally upon us, I highly recommend keeping a pair of snow boots and snow hat, gloves and pants at school through the coming months. We can’t really predict when we’ll have a big snowfall, but when we do, it’s great to get out in it!

Best wishes for the new term!

Jamie

German: Schöne Ferien und ein frohes neues Jahr!

Liebe Eltern,

In grade 5 we focused on the theme of communication. The focus was on listening comprehension and extension of verbs and their use in certain everyday situations.
The children have examined the subject from different angles, both orally and in writing: What media did people use back then? And what communication media do we use today? We learned and conjugated new verbs on the subject of communication, talked and wrote about our preferences (Was magst du gerne, lieber oder am liebsten?) and developed small dialogues on well-being (Was hast du denn? Ich habe Halsschmerzen). Another focus were the possessive pronouns and their application in everyday life, like seine Haare sind kurz or ihr Kleid ist schwarz.

In the cohort classes of grade 5 we are working on a theater project called “Hans im GlĂĽck”. We wrote a little script about this German fairy tale. We will work the next weeks on the realization of the play. Let us surprise you! In the meantime, why don’t you ask your child which character he likes best and why Hans is happy although he has nothing left?

The German team wishes you and your family a wonderful winter holiday!
Stay healthy and a happy new year 2019!

Food Drive in G5

The Grade 5 winter party will take place on Friday, December 14, 10:30 to 12:30, with the whole grade joining together to share the event.

This year we will be incorporating a small community service project into the winter party. We are asking Grade 5 students to bring in non-perishable food items and toiletries for the Swiss Red Cross‘s 2xChristmas program – which offers a holiday distribution here in Switzerland as well as in countries in Eastern Europe. This Swiss Red Cross has been distributing these items for 22 years.

The students will view the following video that provides some insight into the program so that they can understand how their donations will help those in need. This video is in German, but you can add closed-captioning and auto-translate to English.

When deciding what to send in with your child for the community service project, please remember that foodstuffs must have a shelf-life of at least 6 months. Toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, cotton wool, soap and shampoo are also very welcome.

Please make sure your students bring in their items on the week of the winter party!

Please also see the separate post from the PA room parents regarding sending in snacks for the party.

Thanks for your assistance in making this a great Grade 5 year for our children!
